Making Tropical Waves
From Journalism to Tropes
Most of what I have published has been on three Latino-interest news websites. www.theprisma.co.uk is a bilingual paper which began in 2010 and is edited by the Colombian journalist Monica del Pilar Uribe Marin, and this is where I began working without any previous experience, and where I received an informal training, after starting as a proofreader and translator from Spanish.
The other two sites I contribute to are both focused on Latino culture, www.Latinolife.co.uk edited by Amaranta Wright, and www.soundsandcolours.com edited by Russell Slater Johnson.
Living in Lisbon I go to the annual https://doclisboa.org/2023/en/ and https://indielisboa.com/en/ film festivals, and have been interviewing film directors now since 2013, as well as at VisionsduReel in Switzerland more recently.
In order to avoid copyright problems all the journalistic material on this blog is text-only, but each article is accompanied by links to the sites where it can be found with images.
I have translated 2 books from Portuguese, one is an anthropological thesis that was published as O Mundo da Astrologia by Luis Rodolfo Vilhena, and the other is O Tempo do B.Leza by the Brazilian musicologist Glaucia Nogueira, whose new website I have collaborated in translating, https://eng.caboverdeamusica.online/caboverdean-musical-styles/

I began to be interested in semiotics after living for some months in a community which took signs seriously back in 1976. An astrologer came from London to Donegal to do everyone's chart - I declined as my science background made me very sceptical. After leaving the community I began reading about the subject and became fascinated by its symbolism, and also came across the statistical research of Michel and Francoise Gauquelin. My interest and research in this area and the publications that resulted is described in the Astro and Solar-terrestrial section of this blog.
The following year a friend showed me the book Structural Anthropology by Claude Levi-Strauss and pointed out his work on the myths of the Sun and Moon in Latin America, and from this I began to be interested in Structuralism and Semiotics - which is also the title of a short book by Terence Hawkes.
So far I have only had four articles published in academic journals, three in Semiotica but nothing since 2000. My current interest is in the new subject of bio-semiotics and especially in the interface between semiotics and economics, building on the work of Ferruccio Rossi-Landi and J.J. Goux.
